The Cold War And The Soviet Union - 1697 Words

The Cold War, in fact didn’t take place in the winter season, but was just as dangerously cold and unwelcoming, as it focused on two contrasting powers: the U.S. and the Soviet Union. After World War 2, the Cold War influenced capitalist U.S. and communist Soviet Union to engage in disagreements causing many disputes having to use military, economic and humanitarian aid. With different goals, the contrasting powers prove through the Marshall Plan, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and SALT that communism really can’t coexist with capitalism. In World War 2, two groups of powers--the Axis and Allies--relentlessly fought against each other for dominance, resulting in many countries left in ruins with limited supplies and support, until George Catlett Marshall, an American soldier and U.S. Army chief, proposed a plan to rebuild Europe’s economy. He stated that, â€Å"‘Our policy is not directed against any country, but against hunger, poverty, and chaos’†(Zarr 38). Constant fighting lead Europe in terrible ruins with an estimate of 60 million people dead, and especially, German cities in â€Å"An estimated 500 million cubic tons of rubble littered†(Zarr 37), creating no opportunity for Germany to rebuild itself or provide any safety and support for its citizens. This period of suffering was called the Age of Austerity because of the â€Å"drab clothes, long faces, and endless queues†(Zarr 38).
